University Structure Overview

For new instructors, understanding the university's structure is crucial for navigating your role effectively. The Office of the Provost oversees key areas that directly impact your work: Faculty Affairs manages policies and support for faculty; Academic Affairs guides curriculum and teaching initiatives; and individual Colleges and Schools house specific academic programs. This structure ensures coordinated efforts to support your teaching and professional development within your discipline.

FACULTY AFFAIRS

Supports faculty members at all levels and positions throughout their careers; provides guidelines for annual reviews, promotion and tenure reviews, and career development.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Oversees curriculum development, promotes teaching excellence, supports instructor development, and manages curricular affairs to ensure high-quality educational experiences.

U of A has 22 colleges with over 150 majors and 45,000 + students enrolled in 7 campuses.


Instructor Resources

As an instructor, you'll need to manage various administrative tasks throughout the semester. This section provides access to essential tools and resources for course management, including UAccess, syllabus policies, exam scheduling, and important dates. Familiarize yourself with these resources to streamline your teaching responsibilities and support student success.

UAccess Instructor Center Go to UAccess and then select “Instructor Center” to obtain class rosters, perform administrative drops, and assign final grades.

Registrar Support for Instructors

The Registrar's Office supports instructors with registration, record-keeping, and room and course management and scheduling. As a new instructor, you'll interact with us for class rosters, course schedules, and grade submissions. Explore these links to learn more.

General Education Information for Instructors

UArizona’s new General Education curriculum focuses on perspective-taking, interdisciplinary thinking, and reflection. The General Education office provides many resources for instructors teaching in this program, whether in the core UNIV courses or in disciplinary courses that carry General Education attributes.

This section highlights key resources designed to enhance your teaching effectiveness. From course design assistance to library support, these units offer both virtual and in-person interactions with experts who understand our university's unique context and can tailor their guidance to your specific needs. Whether you prefer face-to-face meetings or convenient Zoom consultations, we are ready to assist you.

University Center for Assessment, Teaching, and Technology (UCATT) Arizona’s teaching and learning center offers hands-on teaching and course-design support for all modalities, supports the learning management system and other instructional technologies, produces multimedia instructional content, and more.

University Libraries: For Instructors  The library has a wealth of resources and services for instructors including open educational resources (OER), instructional support services, and access to spaces. 

Teaching with Learning Assistants (LA) 

Learning Assistant Quick Start Program You may be assigned undergraduate or graduate learning assistants to support your teaching. Academic Affairs offers an asynchronous onboarding program each semester to prepare these assistants for maximizing their impact on student learning.

Centrally Scheduled Classroom Map  Office of the Registrar manages scheduling for approximately 250 rooms across campus. Find information on the classroom where your class is scheduled. Some classrooms are department-controlled; if not listed here, contact your department office.

Support for Students’ Wellbeing

Through regular interactions with students, instructors are uniquely positioned to notice changes in behavior, performance, or engagement that may signal a need for support. This frontline role in the classroom allows you to identify struggling students early and connect them with appropriate resources, potentially making a significant difference in a student's academic journey and overall well-being.

Counseling and Psych Services (CAPS)  Refer students for counseling and crisis support, or call and consult to determine how best to help. 

Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) Basic Needs Resources Connect students with assistance to meet their basic needs. 

Dean of Students Office supports students through policies, campus communities, and resources for students who encounter sudden challenges during their time at Arizona. 

International Student Services Connect international students with additional services to support their success. 

Student Success District Student support services and spaces based on collaborative, hands-on learning with deep technological engagement.

Student Success and Retention Innovation (SSRI) Supports undergraduate student success through personalized academic assistance, skill development, tutoring, peer mentoring, and community-building.
